Exfoliative Glaucoma Treatment in Annapolis

May 30, 2014 by Anne Arundel Eye Center

Dr. Sam Boles, an Annapolis eye doctor, specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of glaucoma.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide, accounting for more than 120,000 cases in the United States alone. What many people do not realize is that glaucoma is a term used to describe a number of different conditions, including Primary Open Angle Glaucoma, Angle Closure Glaucoma, Normal Tension Glaucoma, Congenital Glaucoma, and Secondary Glaucoma, just to name a few. This week, we are going to take a closer look at Exfoliative Glaucoma, also known as pseudoexfoliation, which is glaucoma that has developed in people with exfoliation syndrome.

About Exfoliative Glaucoma

Exfoliative glaucoma is a form of open-angle, Secondary Glaucoma caused by the abnormal accumulation of protein in the drainage system of the eye. Patients with this form of glaucoma tend to have higher pressures and faster disease progression than patients with classic primary open-angle glaucoma.

Because of the extreme nature of this form of glaucoma, it is more difficult to control with medical therapy. For this reason, patients typically require a more aggressive stepwise therapy and laser surgery. Many patients with Exfoliative glaucoma respond well to laser trabeculoplasty.

As part of the continued treatment and monitoring of patients with Exfoliative glaucoma, frequent visits with an ophthalmologist are recommended.

The Anne Arundel Eye Center is a regional leader in the diagnosis and treatment of all forms of glaucoma. Board certified ophthalmologist Dr. Samuel Boles will diagnose your specific condition and make recommendations for treatment and future glaucoma management.

“I treat my patients the way I want to be treated when I see a doctor,” said Dr. Boles.

Over the years, Dr. Boles as helped restore and preserve thousands of patients’ vision.
